Fiji Education Program Mid Term Review

Australia's Support to Fiji's Education Sector is a five-year program (2017-2022), valued at up to AUD25 million, and administered by the Fiji Program Support Facility. It is the latest iteration of a long-term commitment by the Australian Government to support the education sector in Fiji.

In May 2021, DFAT commissioned a Mid-Term Review in order to assess the performance of the FEP to date; situate the assessment of performance within significant recent changes in the operating environment (including challenges associated with COVID-19); and identify opportunities for the next phase of the FEP.

The Mid-term review made a number of findings, including that the FEP is relevant and strongly aligned with Government of Fiji priorities, with its ability to respond to emerging priorities one of its strengths. The FEP’s effectiveness has been greatest in strengthening central Ministry systems with uneven results across other priority areas, with the Review noting that gains have been made where locally, contextually appropriate solutions have been implemented, and where FEP has been able to leverage what is already in place. As Fiji responds to and recovers from COVID-19 pandemic, the Review also notes the opportunity to reflect on the balance between responsiveness vis-a-vis commitment to a set of long-term strategic objectives.

DFAT’s management response responds to the fourteen recommendations made in the Mid-Term Review. The review process will inform a Design Update for this program.
